Nigerians have just lost an Icon, a Political father and a Nationalist.
Nigeria’s first indigenous president Alhaji Shehu Shagari is dead at 93. The news came in on Friday 28th December 2018, from the National Hospital, Abuja. He was born on 25th February, 1925.
He was elected Nigeria’s president in the second republic under the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) from 1st October, 1979 –31st December, 1983. The then military coup d’état led by Major General Muhammadu Buhari overthrown him from office in 1983.
In 1954, Shagari was elected into his first public office as a member of the federal House of Representative for Sokoto west at the age of 29.
With his great wealth of experience in service, Shagari served seven times in a ministerial or cabinet post as a federal minister and as federal commissioner from 1958–1975.
