The first female president has been appointed in Ethiopia. Sahle-Work Zewde who is an experienced diplomat, became the first female head of state in Ethiopia. She worked as head of United Nations office to the African Union and other diplomatic positions.

Her appointment as the head of state by the country’s parliament has set a standard to the future and placing women with the power of decision making in government.

Ethiopia practice parliamentary system of government, which makes the president a ceremonial position. Some of her power in this position include; granting pardons, granting high military titles, appointing ambassadors and other envoys to represent the country abroad with approval of the Prime Minister and in accordance with law.
