WORK-LIFE BALANCE: HOW DO I SATISFY MY WORK AND AT THE SAME TIME MY LIFE?

WORK-LIFE BALANCE?
This is simply when an individual or employee is able to split their time and energy between work and their normal life or the other important aspect of their lives. It is the ability to make time for family, friends, many other interesting aspects of life and also balance the daily demands of work.
Many people especially civil servants have had difficulties separating their work life from their normal life, not just separating but also satisfying. So, if my work basically takes all my time, how do I have time for myself and my family? In the first place, your work isn’t supposed to take all your time except you want it to.

HOW TO ACHIEVE WORK-LIFE BALANCE
1. DO NOT ALWAYS BE THE ‘YES’ BUDDY
There are some people that are always willing to help other colleagues in doing their jobs. It is okay to help but don’t overdo it. Overdoing it is when others can always count on you to take their shift or share their work-load. You are only paid for your own work, so work wisely so you can have time to enjoy your leisure time.

2. LEAVE WORK AT WORK
This is one of the biggest challenge workers have. Once you start bringing work home, you will always bring work home. This will not only eat your leisure but also keep you busy and over-stressed always.
3. DEVIATE FROM CHECKING EMAILS AFTER WORK
All workers know there is a possibility their boss may send a work-mail even after work hours. You not checking the mail give you an excuse for not replying. If you always check mails after work, then you will always have to work after work hours. You have to make it obvious you do not do anything related to work after you left the work building.

4. KNOW THAT THE ORGANISATION WITH STILL RUN WITHOUT YOU
Some people work as if without them, the organization would cease to exist. True you may be of so much value that finding someone to replace you will be difficult but still everyone in the work place is replaceable. Also, if you are so engrossed with your work then what happens ‘if you lose your job or lose your life?’ you think the organization will take a year leave- NO WAY!
5. SET RULES TO GUARD YOU
For example, you can make it known you are not available for any work outside work hours. You are paid for working hours not working after working hours. To have a functional life outside work, you have to set rules to enable you balance work and life.
6. WORK HARD AND SMART, NOT LONGER
It is a good thing to work hard and show that you are good at getting the work done properly. That’s an effective skill for work and it will help promoting you to better positions. People are impressed when they see hard working people but don’t be the type to work longer hours because you are good at getting the job done. Tomorrow is another day and you need rest for the task ahead.
7. HAVE A RETIREMENT PLAN
Do not be so preoccupied about the present or the work at hand for now without having a plan for after which you no longer have the strength to work. As an employee, you should have a retirement plan as you won’t always be as young or agile. Look for other things you are interested in or make investments so you can comfortably retire when the time comes.
Even if you love your job and like working always, it isn’t okay to put all your time working. What if ‘you lose that job you can’t do without, what happens then?’ Having a work-life balance gives you the ability to enjoy the income you are working for. It keeps you healthy and strong for each day as it comes. Also for your mental health, work-life balance is very necessary.
